DHCP is the way a computer gets an IP address, DNS servers, and Default Gateway information off the network. Most times for home use the router will provide this function.

DHCP ServerEdit

Simply install the dhcp package

yum install dhcp

Then simply copy the sample config file over the existing one. You may want to back up the existing file first.

cp /usr/share/doc/dhcp-3.0.6/dhcpd.conf.sample /etc/dhcpd.conf

Open the configuration file. Find the section of

subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0

and change the subnet and netmask to match the scheme you have come up with.

Next find the section

option routers			192.168.0.1;
option subnet-mask		255.255.255.0;

Change the routers to the Default Gateway and the subnet should normally match the netmask you just set.

Next find the section

option nis-domain		"domain.org";
option domain-name		"domain.org";

These should be the same and what ever you are setting you domain name to.

Next find the section

option domain-name-servers	192.168.1.1;

Change the IP address listed to the IP address for your DNS server. You may have more then one address to put in this section. Just separate the IP addresses with a comma "," and a space.

Starting the ServerEdit

Please see Managing Services for information of how to set the boot time start up services.

The process name is dhcpd.
